We have tried to compose a list of some of our most Frequently Asked Questions. Feel free to contact us if you still have questions.
Why don’t you list prices on your website?
You may notice that we don’t list flat prices for things like birthday and wedding cakes. This is largely because we individualize our quotes once we have gotten the customer’s detailed request, including flavors, decorations, sizes, etc. we want to keep the ability to make what YOU are looking for, and we don’t want to limit you to basic flavors like chocolate and vanilla.
What information do you need for my custom cake order?
Some of the basic information we need to give you an accurate quote for your custom cake order is:
- Name, Address, Phone Number (or other contact information)
- Cake Flavor(s) – We are willing to make any flavor, but some will have additional costs associated with them.
- Icing Flavor
- Number of Tiers
- Cake size – If you are not sure about the size cake(s) that you need, we can give you a recommendation if you provide the number of servings that you need.
- Design, Decorations and Embellishments – Give us an idea of what you are looking for. Pictures are a great starting point as well. This will help ensure that the final product meets the picture that you had in your mind.
- Date needed
Why do you need several days’ notice for my order?
We are a home-based bakery and are truly a make-to-order business. Unless we are at special events (such as the farmers market or expo events), we do not carry inventory. This means we might not have everything on-hand to make your order and may need time to get ingredients (especially if there are specialized ingredients that we just don’t keep in stock).
Why are your prices higher than the grocery store?
We strive to keep our costs low so that we can keep our prices low. As a home-based small business, we don’t have the ability to take advantage of making items in bulk. We do not have commercial equipment; our cakes and cookies are hand iced and decorated. While we would love to have a store-front, we aren’t there yet as a business (nor are we a bake sale). Prices include the cost of ingredients, packaging, and the time spent on your goods. That means a cake or cookies that have a lot of decorations will cost more than a simple cake or cookies.
We also incorporate a lot of locally grown produce into our recipes. While buying locally in season can save money, we also have expenses associated with preserving these ingredients so that you have the best quality and best flavor. We do freeze, dehydrate, and can our produce to preserve the best flavors and textures. We rarely buy produce from the grocery, instead choosing to support our local farms.
While we are a small business, we believe that the personal touch that we add to your orders is more valuable than buying something off the shelf at the grocery store. Our goal is to leave you feeling as though your product was made exclusively for you, because it is! Your products will taste home made because they ARE home made – from our house to yours.
Where do I buy your apple butter?
Unfortunately, you cannot currently purchase any of our canned goods. If there is enough demand, we will investigate this further, but at this point, we are not looking to do this. You can, however, enjoy a side of our apple butter when you purchase fresh buttermilk biscuits.
Can I order goods that do not contain allergens?
We are required to label our products with a list of ingredients, so you will always know what ingredients are in our products. We are sensitive to nut allergies, as parents of two children with allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. If you have a specific food allergy, please contact us directly and see if we can meet your needs. While we do our best to avoid cross-contamination, we do use the same equipment (mixer, bowls, whisks, etc.) for our baking, so we have the same disclaimer that you see on many foods (e.g. Manufactured in the same facility that also processes peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, etc.). Equipment is washed and sanitized between orders to reduce the possibility of this cross-contamination.
Do you offer gluten free products?
While gluten-free is not our specialty, we are happy to work with you to develop recipes that meet your specific allergen needs. Please contact us directly if gluten is a concern for you. We do have a local supplier of chestnut flour, which is gluten free. Availability of this local flour is limited, however.
Can I visit your store?
We do not currently have a store-front. Our bakery is our home, though we have a separate building where much of the decorating takes place. You are certainly welcome to view this when you pick up your orders.
Can you ship your products?
We have not shipped many of our products. Certain products would not ship well. If this is something you are interested in, please contact us directly and we can discuss what the shipping options are. We may offer seasonal products that would ship well, such as cookie mixes, bread mixes, etc. There would be an additional shipping fee associated with these. Shipping is limited to the continental US.
