Dogs have different ways of communicating with each other. So senses like smell play a vital role in how dogs socialise and get to know each other.
So the truffle of dogs is always at work. And that’s whether it’s sniffing around the house, observing the delicious smells in the kitchen, exploring the park and more.
In fact, dogs have 200 to 300 million olfactory receptors. Man, meanwhile, has only 5 million. That’s why the information provided by their sense of smell is radically superior to what we can perceive through our noses.
Why do dogs always sniff the crotch?
If a dog has ever approached you to sniff your crotch, don’t worry. It’s actually a perfectly natural behavior. They’re actually trying to gather information about the person. “The most common reason dogs sniff this area is that as part of their normal socialization with other members of their species, this is the first area they should sniff. This part actually releases pheromones which therefore allows them to learn a little bit more about the animal’s condition. If it’s in heat, if it’s a fertile female, if it’s a neutered male,” said veterinarian Paula Muñoz.
When a dog wants to know more about a human, that’s where it goes. So when they smell us or approach us, that’s the first thing they look for. So they try to learn a little bit more about our environment and what they can expect from us.
Next time your dog does this, don’t scold or abuse him. It’s really natural behaviour and a gesture of concern for the human. “It goes without saying that this behavior is never.” motivated by bad intentions. They just want to socialize and get to know the person they are approaching,” the vet said.
However, your pet may sniff the crotch of strangers and make them uncomfortable. In this case, you can walk your pet on a leash and prevent this from happening.
